Different' on campus: When transgender students are treated gently

Teacher, I want to change my name, "Lin Xiao (pseudonym), a high school freshman, said in the homeroom teacher's office, his palms turning white. To her surprise, the teacher did not question, but instead handed her a cup of warm water and said, "Let's think together about how to help you." Nowadays, such scenes are happening more and more on campuses. As an important scene for transgender groups to interact with society, campuses are using inclusive education to build a safe zone for their growth.

In the past, transgender students often fell into an "invisible dilemma". According to research conducted by the Ministry of Education, over 70% of transgender students have experienced campus isolation due to their gender identity, 38% have been given derogatory nicknames, and 19% have been forced to transfer schools. They dare not change clothes in physical education class, dare not sit with classmates in the cafeteria, and are even afraid of being called by their real name by the teacher - those titles that are bound to their biological gender are pricked in their hearts like thorns. The lack of knowledge about gender diversity in schools has left them in a situation where they have no way to seek help. One student admitted, "I thought I was sick, but I didn't know who to talk to

Nowadays, the campus is breaking this silence. A middle school in Beijing has launched a school-based curriculum on "gender equality", which uses picture books and situational dramas to help students understand that "gender is not just about men and women"; Several universities in Shanghai have established "gender friendly dormitories" that allow transgender students to choose their own roommates to live with; A middle school in Guangzhou has opened a "green channel for using names" for transgender students, synchronously updating their recognized names and gender titles in the campus system. These measures may seem subtle, but they are like a beam of light - when teachers naturally use pronouns that students identify with in class, and when classmates actively invite them to join clubs, transgender students can finally find a sense of belonging on campus.

But change still requires more effort. Some schools in remote areas still lack gender diversity education, some teachers avoid related topics due to concerns about "controversy", and parents have misunderstandings about the school's inclusive policies. In fact, campus care has never been "special treatment", but "equal respect" - just like providing glasses for nearsighted students, adjusting meals for allergic students, providing support for transgender students, just meeting their basic needs.

When Lin Xiao attended the graduation ceremony wearing a girls' school uniform, she wrote in her diary, "So I don't have to hide myself, I can still be gently accepted by the world." The campus's attention to transgender is not only a warmth for minority groups, but also an important lesson for all students: respecting differences can make every life shine.
